PATHWAYS TO LITERACY FOR THE EL SALVADOR PROGRAM
LITERACY & EDUCATION

The El Salvador Program was created to support children by building a school in the la Laguna Seca Community.

"Offering a brighter future through a window of opportunities"

The school will include 4-5 classrooms, a directors office, washrooms,  a kitchen, a store and storage areas. The program will also work to supply uniforms, perform health assessments, offer transportation, nutrition and school materials.

By training families to recognize nutritional, environmental and health issues, the El Salvador program will begin to build strengths in the community that will improve the quality of life.

220 children and their families will benefit from this program in the first three years plus by providing facilities another 220 are expected to benefit from access to school. Combined with their immediate families of an average size of six and extended families this can have a huge impact on the community of say 2400 or more people.

Literacy &Education
Desks are to be provided for students along with sports equipment in one school. Birth certificates for new children to the program  are provided.

Often a very difficult barrier to the education of children in El Salvador is gaining the commitment from guardians to participate in the parents association, which is required for children to attend school. Through an administrator, the program works to coordinate this type of partnership with the parents and will receive each parents permission for child attendance.

Adult education
The program is holding 5 events to help the newly legalized Community Association to gain leadership and organizational experience. Through these events adults will be educated on nutrition, safe clean water, hygiene and sanitation of washrooms.

The program will teach adults how to clean contaminated water of most  disease causing microbes. Rotary is sponsoring a washroom, cistern, septic tank and a security wall for safe activities.

Health
The Program provides health checkups, lab tests, medicine for parasites and common ailments. Nutritional counselling is offered to families, along with transportation to and from all health checkups and other appointments.

Nutrition
A healthy meal is supplied daily to each person who attends school.

With the help of a Community Administrator, the Rotary Club in El Salvador coordinates this program. In partnership with other Rotary clubs, we hope to expand to La Lajas and Suchitoto and support through them school and water needs in those areas in future years.  They both currently have active volunteers from our area travelling to these communities involved in construction or training.
